The History and Preservation of Papyrus Manuscripts and Book Structures

Papyrus is one of the oldest materials used as a substrate to carry the written word. Marieka Kaye, conservator of the papyrus collection at the University of Michigan Library, will give an overview of the manufacture, use, and properties of papyrus as it has been used for writing and codex construction. This overview will be followed by a discussion of preservation concerns and recommendations for care. 

This talk will be recorded and available to ticket-holders for 24 hours only to allow participation from people in multiple time zones & with other commitments.

Speaker: Marieka Kaye manages the Conservation Lab at the University of Michigan Library and specializes in the treatment of papyrus. She received a MA and Certificate of Advanced Study in Art Conservation from Buffalo State College and a Masters of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University. Marieka started working in the field of library preservation in 1998, during her senior year at Brandeis University. Prior to starting her position at U-M in 2013, she served as a conservator at The Huntington Library for eight years.
