conservation at kings college chapel

This multi-year project is the most extensive conservation to the internationally significant woodwork of the quire in the last 75 years.

Bainbridge Conservation are specialist accredited conservators who are expert in historic woodwork and joinery. Each year they are focusing on a different aspect of the programme.

Damage has occurred from constant use over centuries, from old woodworm and historic pest treatment, and from natural degradation of the timber accumulation of dust and dirt.

The woodwork dates as far back as the 1520s, with the screen and choirstalls boasting some of the finest woodcarving in the country. Later additions include the carved panels with royal coats of arms from the 1630s and the columns and arcaded canopies from the 1680s.

The goal is to clean, stabilise and re-instate lost elements across the choirstalls and screen. The carved armorial panels require structural repairs, replacement of lost carving and extensive cleaning. The canopies and cresting along the back of the choirstalls need cleaning; these areas have the greatest amount of accumulated dirt as they are the hardest to reach. The decorative elements, finials and cartouches along the top are being secured and stabilised.

The Bainbridge conservators are combining cutting-edge conservation techniques with traditional historic craft to preserve the woodwork for generations to come. If you would like to support the work please follow this link.
